What do baseball and web security have in common?

No, this isn’t a bad joke setup! At first glance, they seem completely unrelated—but when you take a closer look, there are some surprisingly interesting parallels.

With the Major League Baseball playoffs just around the corner, we took inspiration from the game to draw a few comparisons.

As they say in baseball: Let’s play ball!

First Inning: Offense vs. Defense

In baseball, it’s easy to distinguish between offense and defense. The team on the field (defense) aims to prevent the opposing team from scoring, while batters and runners (offense) try to rack up runs before the third out.

In the digital world, security measures act as the defense, while hackers, bots, and malicious actors form the offense—constantly searching for vulnerabilities to access your data.

Second Inning: Pitchers vs. Security Protocols

We don’t always think about it, but the pitcher is the first line of defense. By mixing pitch types, speeds, and positioning, they aim to outsmart the batter.

Similarly, just as pitchers and catchers communicate through signals—or now via electronic tools like PitchCom—security protocols (such as HTTPS) ensure secure communication between browsers and servers, preventing data from being intercepted or easily decoded.

Third Inning: Fielders vs. Security Mechanisms

Outfielders aim to catch balls before they clear the fence.

Likewise, security mechanisms are designed to catch vulnerabilities in code and prevent malicious exploitation of data.

Fourth Inning: Preventing Steals

Catchers and infielders work together to stop runners from stealing bases.

In web security, cybersecurity professionals play a similar role—protecting against data theft and unauthorized access to sensitive information.

Fifth Inning: Strategy vs. Planning

In baseball, strategy includes decisions like stealing bases, bunting, defensive positioning, and batting order.

In cybersecurity, strategy involves planning defenses against threats. Here are a few best practices:

  • Change your passwords regularly (at least once a year—ideally every 90–120 days)

  • Avoid using the same password across multiple platforms

  • Stay away from obvious passwords (like changing Sunshine2023 to Sunshine2024)

  • Don’t share your passwords unless absolutely necessary

  • Use passphrases instead of simple passwords (e.g., “sun mailbox peanut cement box” is far more secure than names or pet references)

Sixth Inning: Errors vs. Vulnerabilities

In baseball, an error—like dropping a ball—can allow a runner to reach base or score.

In cybersecurity, a vulnerability or coding mistake can open the door to attacks and expose sensitive data.

Seventh Inning: Training vs. Continuous Improvement

Just like in sports, constant practice is essential.

In cybersecurity, regularly revisiting best practices helps minimize vulnerabilities—just as a pitcher continually refines their curveball.

(Shoutout to Dave, our web developer, who caught a Blue Jays vs. Yankees game earlier this week!)

Eighth Inning: Umpires vs. Auditors

Umpires ensure the rules are followed on the field.

Similarly, auditors and compliance organizations ensure that security standards and regulations are properly enforced to protect your data.

Ninth Inning: Stats vs. Performance

Both baseball and web security rely heavily on data and performance metrics.

Teams analyze player stats to make strategic decisions, while cybersecurity professionals use analytics to evaluate system performance and identify vulnerabilities.

Extra Innings

As you can see, baseball and web security share more similarities than you might expect.

Both highlight the importance of strategy, teamwork, prevention, and continuous improvement.

Just as baseball teams aim to win games, Duo’s digital team is dedicated to protecting your digital assets.

So whether you’re watching a game or securing your online presence, remember: strong defense is key—no matter the playing field.
